Ukraine demands new anti-Russian sanctions from Europe
The European Union must act tougher towards Russia and impose sectoral sanctions against it for the detention of Ukrainian sailors who tried to break through the state border in the Kerch Strait area in November 2018.
Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe Dmitry Kuleba stated this on UATV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I believe that the European Union could and should have acted even tougher and not limited itself to personal sanctions, but introduced sectoral ones. We believe that the Russian Federation will continue to escalate, and Europe needs to be ready to increase pressure systematically,” Kuleba said.
This is how he commented on the recent introduction by the European Union of sanctions against 8 Russians who participated in the detention of Ukrainian provocateurs.
“The presence of a reaction is a positive signal. They could theoretically limit themselves to political statements. It is important that legal decisions have been made and readiness to expand sanctions mechanisms in the event of escalation has been confirmed,” Kuleba said.
