About it says a document submitted by the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, which was published on the official portal of the department on September 28.

In particular, it says that the decision to remove spent nuclear fuel from the territory of the Russian Federation was made in connection with the need for Ukraine to fulfill international obligations for the safe handling and disposal of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

The Ukrainian energy department has already created a working group whose responsibilities include preparing the documentation necessary to conclude a contract, on the basis of which products from the processing of spent nuclear fuel will be exported from the territory of the Mayak enterprise located in the Chelyabinsk region to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, today Ukraine does not have tanks designed to store spent nuclear fuel. Their construction on the territory of the Chernobyl exclusion zone should begin no earlier than 2016. According to experts, an amount of 260 million hryvnia is needed for the construction and equipment of storage facilities.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, the country currently does not have technologies that allow the reuse of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing products. However, department officials hope that in the future scientists will be able to create a new type of reactor capable of running on spent fuel.
