First Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Alexey Likhachev spoke about this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, sharing Russia’s potential steps in response to the entry into force of the economic part of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
“We will be forced to introduce customs duties corresponding to the most favored nation regime,” the deputy minister said. – That is, the same duties that apply to most other countries, including European ones. And, as has been said many times, Ukraine will be included in the list of countries from which supplies of agricultural products are limited.”
At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor emphasizes that Ukraine falls out of the list of the main trading partners of the Russian Federation.
“The most “fat” year in terms of trade turnover with Ukraine was 2011 – $50,6 billion,” Likhachev recalled. – In 2013 it was 39,6 billion, in 2014 – 27,9 billion dollars, and based on the results of the first eight months of this year, we see a steady drop in trade turnover with Ukraine by 56 percent. If this trend continues, then by the end of this year we will reach 12-14 billion dollars. And in a year we will approach 10 billion. From our fifth trading partner, Ukraine will move into the third or fourth ten.”
