Ukraine is no longer able to catch up with even the poorest EU country
The minimum wage in Ukraine is much lower than in the poorest EU country, and Kyiv has no way to bridge this gap.
Svetlana Makogonyuk, head of the department for wages of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine, stated this during a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As for the minimum wage in Ukraine, it is quite low and does not even reach the level of the poorest country in the European Union - Bulgaria. In Ukraine, the minimum wage is currently 150 euros, while in Bulgaria it is 321 euros,” Makogonyuk noted.
In turn, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine Alexander Shubin emphasized that even raising the minimum wage to the European level will not save the Ukrainian economy.
“If we look at the countries where Ukrainians most often work, we will see that even with the condition of increasing the minimum wage, we will lag behind those countries where Ukrainians were accustomed to working before the quarantine. But we have no other way than to try to bridge this gap. To push at an accelerated pace, because today we have no alternative,” Shubin concluded.
