Ukraine stated at the UN that it does not intend to be friends with Russia for the next 10 years
Ukraine does not plan to extend the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation with the Russian Federation for at least the next 10 years, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in the statement of the Ukrainian delegation at the meeting of the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly regarding the rule of law at the national and international levels.
The Ukrainian side stated that it fully agrees with the UN Secretary-General that the proper implementation of international treaties is “the cornerstone of the global system of harmonization of international relations.” Regardless of how many parties there are to this Treaty, all obligations undertaken must be respected, the statement said.
“However, this does not apply to the Russian Federation when we are dealing with the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” the statement said.
According to the Ukrainian delegation, the Russian Federation “ignored the basic principles of the Treaty, including threatening and then violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine, carrying out armed aggression against Ukraine and using military and economic pressure and interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine, thereby violating the principles of sovereign equality and rights of citizens of Ukraine.”
“Under such circumstances and in the absence of good will to peacefully resolve disputes regarding numerous and significant violations of the treaty, extension of the Treaty by Ukraine for the next decade is fundamentally impossible,” the statement said.
Earlier, Petro Poroshenko, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, handed over a note to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about Ukraine’s decision not to renew the friendship treaty with Russia.
