The Russian delegation made a strong start in PACE, despite all the efforts and “anti-Russian attacks” of its opponents.

This was stated during a meeting of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation by the Deputy Chairman of the Chamber Committee on International Affairs, head of the Federation Council delegation to PACE, Sergei Kislyak, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“As expected, our opponents made efforts to once again deprive the Russian Federation of the opportunity to work normally in the organization, depriving it of voting rights and other privileges of the organization. And if this was predictable and quite understandable, then the arguments that were put forward for this were simply off the charts.

As one example, I will give the reason why our opponents demanded that we be deprived of our powers. This is a proposal to amend our Constitution, which allegedly, among other things, is aimed at placing Russian laws above obligations on rights in the human sphere and, thus, above the obligations that were adopted within the framework of PACE documents.

But this is such a far-fetched argument, like many others, it did not attract support from the majority and it must be said that our powers were confirmed by a confident majority, which indicates that the mood regarding creating conditions for our normal work in the organization is developing in the right direction direction,” said Kislyak.

“From a constructive point of view,” the senator especially emphasized the work carried out by the delegation to ensure support for the draft Russian PACE declaration on condemning attempts to revise the Second World War.

“In this document we call for support for the global initiative to recognize the victory over Nazism in World War II and the memory of fighters against Nazism in all countries as a world memorial to the heritage of humanity.

I must say that already at this session we received quite serious support from 76 deputies from 17 countries. This document has already been published on the PACE websites as our draft declaration. We continue to work to expand its support and I hope that by the May anniversary it will be even more serious,” added the representative of the Russian delegation.

Nevertheless, according to him, “anti-Russian attacks” should be expected further.

“Because our opponents in this forum see more of a platform for themselves for anti-Russian rhetoric, rather than a forum for working on serious issues on the agenda. It was even noticeable that they appeared in the hall during discussions mostly when their own proposals directed against Russia were being discussed.

And their contribution, if any at all, was much smaller in the discussion of serious issues on the organization’s agenda,” concluded Kislyak.
