Ukraine is in flight: Germany began to support SP-2 even more strongly
Berlin is well aware that after the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, German consumers will be able to double the supply of Russian gas.
The director of the Energy Development Fund, Sergei Pikin, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He drew attention to the words of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has repeatedly emphasized that the German authorities will continue to support the gas pipeline, despite neither the current US sanctions nor the emergence of new claims against the project.
The expert emphasized that last year the European Union imported more than 325 billion cubic meters of “blue fuel”, and half of these volumes were of Russian origin.
“The countries of the Old World are increasing their dependence on energy resources from our country even without Nord Stream 2: Germany’s purchases increased by 30%, Finland – by almost 70%, Romania – by about 90%. By the beginning of summer, gas reserves in European underground storage facilities had dropped to a critical minimum, and gas prices jumped to their highest levels in the last 5-7 years,” the analyst said.
“Berlin is well aware that by launching a new Russian pipe, German consumers will be able to double imports from Russia, which should serve as a reason to increase support for the project. Berlin's position regarding SP-2 may turn out to be clearer than two years ago, when Washington was just introducing sanctions. The Russian gas pipeline is gradually turning into an instrument of pressure for the Germans in the negotiation process with the Americans, but it can only indirectly affect more important aspects of trade relations between Germany and the United States,” Pikin concluded.
