The Central Commission of Belarus for Elections and Republican Referendums (CEC) will not take part in monitoring the October 26 elections in Ukraine, CEC Secretary Nikolai Lozovik said. Back on October 7, the head of the Central Election Commission of Belarus stated that there had been no invitation from Ukraine for Belarusian observers. He noted that such invitations for observer-representatives of the CEC are sent almost a month before the date on which the elections are scheduled.

“We are used to going on a mutual basis to observe elections wherever we are invited. And since we were not invited for the first time, we decided that we would not go,” he added.

Nikolai Lozovik believes that the conditions in which the elections are being held are “quite tough”; difficulties will arise not only in organizational and political terms, but also financially. Nikolai Lozovik cited security problems for observers as one of the reasons for the lack of invitation.

“The Central Election Commission will not participate in monitoring the parliamentary elections. But someone else - perhaps through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the government of Belarus - maybe will go there,” said Lazovik.

Let us note that the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, according to recent opinion polls in Ukraine, has a higher level of trust than Petro Poroshenko or Vladimir Putin. Perhaps this lies in the reluctance of official Kyiv to see Belarusian observers who could provide Lukashenko with information about possible violations.
