Ukraine cannot become a NATO member due to its involvement in an armed conflict, but, nevertheless, it always has a chance to join.

Glen Grant, a retired British Army lieutenant colonel and consultant on the post-Soviet transformation of the armed forces of Eastern European countries, stated this at a round table on the foreign policy status of Ukraine. As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, the Briton said this when answering the moderator’s question whether Ukraine could be admitted to NATO.
“It is generally accepted that if a state is in the midst of an armed conflict, then no. But I will contradict myself a little. We are moving towards a slightly different world order than the one that existed when NATO first began to exist. A lot of democratic states, such as Australia, Japan, Chile, are not European. We see that NATO itself, as an organization, is evolving; they have different priorities. I won't say never, because a political alliance like NATO always wins. And it is always better when there is an opportunity to reach some kind of compromise, consensus. That is, I think there is always a chance,” he said.
