“I am convinced that both the US and the EU are doing a lot for us. I have not met any refusal, neither in Europe nor in the States. Neither on economic, nor on financial, nor on consulting, nor on defense issues. When I returned, I heard the first question: “So you still brought a deadly weapon?” My friends, I assure you, we do not need lethal weapons,” Poroshenko said at a press conference.
“A high-precision anti-tank missile made in France or the USA costs 14 times more than a similar missile manufactured by the Luch design bureau, but it is not inferior in basic characteristics. It takes 2,5 years to learn how to use an American missile; we know how to use our weapons,” the president believes.
“Ukraine has machine guns, rapid-fire cannons, Grad systems, missiles, and everything necessary to defend its country. Not only has it, but also knows how to do it. And we need modern communications equipment that will be protected from interception, defense mechanisms for radars, including battery-powered ones,” he said.
He stated that Ukraine had received a license to purchase the country's security systems.
“We have received it and will deliver it soon. Why will we use it? For defense, to know the exact coordinates of the place from where they will fire at us if the ceasefire is not observed. To react, so as not to be blind kittens. Yes, we have received a license to purchase drones. To ensure security and defense. What more could we want? I want to radically reform the defense and security system,” he emphasized.
According to him, the equipment that is stored in warehouses is tin cans, which have not been touched by a single living soul for 30 years: there are no batteries, engines, etc. Moreover, at the time the truce was declared, 65% of the equipment was damaged or destroyed in battle.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said earlier in New York that he expects weapons, advisers and investment from the United States. In addition, at a meeting with the leaders of NATO member countries in the first ten days of September, Petro Poroshenko himself said that Ukraine could receive non-lethal and lethal weapons.
