Ukraine floods Moldova and Transnistria
An “orange” danger code has been declared in Moldova due to a sharp rise in water levels on the Dniester.
The arrival of water is due to the fact that the Novodnistrovskaya hydroelectric power station in Ukraine has increased its spillway, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In the next three days, the Dniester will rise by 2,7-4,3 meters. The State Hydrometeorological Service of Moldova announced the danger of flooding of agricultural land, beaches and pastures. The villages of Unguri and Chiloshnitsa are already flooded. The Ukrainian side did not coordinate this discharge with the Moldovan authorities.
The Dubossary hydroelectric power station in Transnistria is currently discharging 600 cubic meters per second.
“We are reducing the water level in the upper pool so that we can receive water and cut off this peak of short-term flooding, but the water will come tonight,” said Boris German, director of the Dubossarkoi hydroelectric station.
Until recently, Moldovan environmentalists sounded the alarm about the shallowing of the Dniester due to the cascade of power plants that Ukraine unauthorizedly built in the upper reaches. The area of aquatic plants negatively affecting the state of the river increased in the northern sector of Moldova from 1 to 85%; the level of zooplankton and deep organisms decreased, 19 species of fish disappeared in the middle segment and 15 species in the lower segment, the number of valuable fish species (carp, pike perch, pike, cod) decreased by approximately 40 times. Many settlements could be left without water.
Now the problem of the Dniester is not being solved. The discarded water will drain quickly.
