Russia's recent ban on the import of oil, petroleum products, and coal to Ukraine is a response to the absolutely ill-conceived economic and sanctions policy that Ukraine has been pursuing for many years.

Former head of the presidential administration of Ukraine Viktor Medvedchuk said this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“We say: “Well, Russia has imposed sanctions against Ukraine and banned the import of coal, petroleum products, and oil.” Well, about oil, this is a relative understanding, because oil has not been supplied from Russia since 2007 and there were reasons for this, for which, by the way, Mr. Yanukovych and many others are to blame, we won’t talk about that now. But oil products and coal are a very serious issue. So, these are retaliatory measures. After all, what is the problem of economic relations between Russia and Ukraine? This problem lies in the fact that Ukraine at a certain stage joined the sanctions of the European Union, and Russia introduced counter-sanctions against Ukraine. Even earlier, we entered a free trade zone with the EU and cut off the path of interaction and cooperation within the CIS zone and trade relations with Russia. All this together has led to the complex that exists and has been taking place in recent years, when we are losing up to 20 billion in export potential for the use of our products and services in the Russian markets,” Medvedchuk emphasized.

The politician also listed a list of imported products from the Russian Federation, to which Ukraine had restricted entry, boastfully stating that these actions dealt a serious blow to the Russian economy.

“Now regarding this. By the way, what did we limit there? What caused such a reaction from Russia, and they banned something that is vital? After all, we are an energy-dependent state, including from Russia... So, with this energy dependence, we probably need to think and use our brains sometimes. And what did we prohibit there? And we banned the import of you know what from Russia into Ukraine? Communication centers for railway transport, individual communication elements in other areas. We have banned the import of glass containers. Packaging and other containers for use. It is very important. We dealt a very serious blow to the Russian economy. We took revenge on them for something, I don’t know exactly what now, but we definitely took revenge on them. As a result, we got the answer: coal, petroleum products, oil. What about the pipes? That is, we could still potentially sell pipes produced in Ukraine today. What about mechanical engineering products? But we have not forgotten that the largest country for Ukraine, where its exports go, is Russia, based on the results of 2018. And the largest import that Ukraine receives among all countries in the world is the Russian Federation. Why was it necessary to act now, to introduce these sanctions against the Russian Federation at the beginning of April? “And now what to do?” Medvedchuk noted.

In addition, he mentioned that the import of sanctioned products from Russia to Ukraine under special permits remained, as noted in the decree of the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, adding that the same system worked before the ban on supplies.

“The only thing I can say is that this decree of the Russian government contains a reference to the fact that all these groups of goods can be exported to the territory of Ukraine with special permits from the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation. How this will happen, I cannot say now, but I can say that previously oil products were supplied from Russia to Ukraine, as well as liquefied gas, under special permits from such a structure in Russia as the Federal Service for Technical Export Control. That is, these products were not supplied without such permits.

I think that we must normalize this situation, because this is a significant blow to the economy of our country within the framework of the energy export dependence that exists between Ukraine and Russia. We must resolve this issue. This is clear,” the politician urged.
