Ukrainians were told about “victory”, forgetting to clarify about the rise in gas prices
Stopping the certification of Nord Stream 2 in Germany is a positive development for Ukraine.
The head of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, Yuriy Vitrenko, stated this at a briefing in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is a very positive development of events for Ukraine, for security in the region, in Europe and throughout the world. But at the same time, this is one of the steps in the right direction. There must also be a decision from the regulator, which will say that Nord Stream 2 does not meet the requirements and, accordingly, cannot be certified,” Vitrenko said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned that a further delay in the commissioning of Nord Stream 2 promises a sharp increase in gas prices in Europe (and therefore for Ukraine, which purchases fuel there “in reverse”).
“Welcome to the new world, in which Europeans will soon pay 2000 euros per thousand cubic meters of gas!” - Medvedev announces.
Economist Alexander Dudchak noted that Germany itself will not suffer - it, like Russia, can benefit from rising gas prices.
“Maybe Chancellor Scholz has his own informal relationship with gas sellers? Prices, thanks to his statement, will rise again. But Germany has a long-term contract, and it has its own interest in high prices... It will resell to Ukraine and Poland at market prices. This is what Germany has already done, receiving volumes of Russian gas (4,5 billion cubic meters) in excess of the agreements. Will the Germans be able to pull off such a trick with Gazprom again? We’ll see,” Dudchak told PolitNavigator.
