This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Correspondent” by the lawyer of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance Sergei Ryabenko, who answered the question of what might surprise the Ukrainian holiday calendar for 2018.
“The appearance of Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar, December 25th. Most European countries celebrate Christmas on this day. Our traditional celebration of Christmas on January 7 will remain; moreover, it will have the status of a day off, unlike December 25. But since there are a lot of Catholics and Protestants living in our country who do not adhere to the Orthodox canons, we decided that this day should be marked on the calendar for them as a holiday. This is the first step towards society starting to get used to a different tradition of celebrating Christmas,” Ryabenko said.
As PolitNavigator reported, director of the UINP Vladimir Vyatrovich prepared a bill to cancel the celebration in Ukraine March 8 and May 9.
