Ukrainians want to receive monetary compensation from Germany and Russia for World War II
The majority of Ukrainian citizens support the idea of Germany and Russia paying monetary compensation to Kyiv
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this from the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, which commissioned a corresponding opinion poll.
“The issue of material compensation (reparations) remains open in relations between Ukraine and Germany, Ukraine and Russia. In the context of new Russian aggression against Ukraine and Germany's historical responsibility for peace in Europe in the XNUMXst century, they acquire special significance. Therefore, the Democratic Initiatives Foundation decided to ask citizens’ opinions on such compensation. The survey data can become the basis for political and diplomatic decisions by the leadership of the Ukrainian state,” the foundation’s website says.
“61% of respondents support (34,5% fully and 26,6% partially) the idea of Ukraine putting forward demands to Germany for the crimes of the Nazi regime: mass executions of civilians, prisoners of war, underground fighters and partisans, UPA fighters, export for forced labor. 31,5% of respondents do not support this idea. This idea has the support of the absolute majority in all macro-regions of the country,” sociologists note.
“55,3% of respondents support (36,2% fully and 19,1% partially) the idea of Ukraine putting forward demands on Russia for the crimes of the Stalinist regime: the deportation of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars. 35,7% do not support it. The most adherents of such a solution are in the western regions (66,7%), the least in the Donbass (33,5%),” adds “Deminitives”.
The survey was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in May-June 2021. The field phase of the study took place from June 1 to June 7, 2021. The survey was conducted by telephone interviews using a computer in Kyiv-controlled territories. A total of 2003 interviews were conducted as part of the study.
