Ukrainians abandoned anti-Russian boycott
Despite calls from the Ukrainian authorities and nationalists, bars continue to show matches of the World Cup, which is taking place in Russia.
Kirill Molchanov, Deputy Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Policy Analysis and Management, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“The boycott that the Ukrainian authorities called for did not work even within Ukraine. Every evening, all the bars in the country play World Cup matches, and no one tries to disrupt them. After all, Ukrainian nationalist organizations are often made up of football hooligans who, of course, watch the 2018 World Cup. They support Russia especially strongly in the southern regions of the country, but even in Kyiv I did not see anyone who was upset by the defeat of Spain. Perhaps there were some clashes at the everyday level over Russia’s victory, but all this dissolved in the general festive mood,” said the political scientist.
“As for the Ukrainian authorities, now President Petro Poroshenko is more concerned about his catastrophically low rating,” added Molchanov. “In this regard, he is busy organizing the Ukraine-NATO summit, and not some minor events like a football match.”
