The Kiev weekly “Commentaries” writes about this in a publication dedicated to the decision of the Ministry of Education to exclude world history and world literature from the EPE program.
“Abandonment of world history will mean, among other things, a transition to conscious mental and cultural autarky - and there is nothing worse than such a peasant approach at a time when the fate of modern Ukraine is being decided with the participation of leading world players and the European community,” believes edition.
The weekly draws attention to the fact that fundamental knowledge in law and economics is impossible without knowledge of world history, since in their evolution these disciplines passed through certain stages of development, depending on the historical contexts of a particular period of history.
“It turns out that without knowledge of world history, future Ukrainian economists and lawyers are doomed to remain applied specialists, trained only to apply the changing norms of current legislation,” emphasizes “Comments.” – And although it is impossible to do without such professionals, the consequence of this trend will be a further decline in the entire quality of higher education: fundamental science itself will degenerate, losing the ability to reproduce teaching staff.
Negative consequences for the country, the publication predicts, will not be long in coming.
“If the Ministry of Education does not reconsider its decision, all that remains is to calculate how much time will pass until the moment of intellectual catastrophe in Ukraine,” the weekly warns. – In a year, school graduates deprived of motivation to study world history will become students. Another five years will pass with young specialists. In another five to six years, they will begin to occupy positions in middle management. That is, in about twelve years, management systems - state, business and the same science - will begin to be occupied by people with a low level of humanitarian and social science training, whose horizons will be limited to examples from the history of their own country exclusively.”
