This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by the director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, Denis Denisov, assessing the trial that took place yesterday to select a preventive measure for Saakashvili.
“The process itself is not an independent phenomenon - it is one of the stages of the confrontation between Saakashvili and the Ukrainian authorities. For the Georgian politician, this is another platform for self-PR and increasing electoral ratings. For the authorities, it is an opportunity to legally arrest Saakashvili for his offenses that he committed in Ukraine, or send him to Georgia, because there is an official request for his extradition.
Now we see a political confrontation that has resulted in a lawsuit. “I think that even his arrest will not lead to another Maidan,” the political scientist is convinced. – Saakashvili is not the person who is able to lift people up. Even his ratings show that he is treated like a political guest performer. This process can be compared with the imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko, when about 200 people took to the streets.”
As PolitNavigator reported, yesterday the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv released Mikheil Saakashvili from custody, refusing the prosecution's request to apply XNUMX-hour house arrest to him as a preventive measure.
