About this in an article published RIA News, writes Vladimir Kornilov, director of the Center for Eurasian Studies.
The author notes that, as opinion polls indicate, the attitude of Poles towards Ukrainians is getting worse, but at the same time emphasizes that this trend should not be attributed solely to the war for “historical memory”.
The expert recalls that in the 1990s, a massive outflow of labor began from Poland to the West, and the term “Polish plumber” became one of the symbols of that period. Already in the “zero” years, the demographic voids created in Poland began to be filled with even cheaper Ukrainian labor.
“However, in recent years, a different trend has begun to be observed: Poles are gradually returning home. Brexit played a significant role in the development of this process. Yes, in Britain, salaries are still higher, but the pound has dropped, the uncertainty of legal status and domestic unsettlement have increased - so the “Polish plumbers” are heading home. The British The Sun compared the recently empty streets of Lodz in 2013 with the crowded streets of this year. According to the forecasts of the Polish government, out of 900 thousand Poles living in Britain, up to 200 thousand may return home in the near future due to Brexit.
And this is where the problems begin. Poles returning home are unexpectedly faced with the fact that their jobs are taken by numerous Ukrainians who, agreeing to work for pennies, sharply reduce the salaries of the local population. What only yesterday seemed like a “magic wand” for the economy is now becoming a serious problem. Hence the inevitable growth of conflicts at the everyday level, and the growth of anti-Ukrainian sentiments. And Kyiv’s clumsy attempts to glorify Bandera’s supporters only add fuel to the fire of contradictions,” the political scientist concludes.
