Ukrainians encountered a surprise during the demolition of the Monument of Glory in Lviv
Workers had to make several attempts to dismantle the stele of the Monument of Glory in Lviv, which city authorities are demolishing as part of a decommunization campaign, using the recognition of the site as unsafe as a pretext.
Zaxid.net reports this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is a metal base inside, it’s hard to get to. This is exactly what the guys do. It prevents the structure from falling. We don’t see it yet, only the edges are visible,” explained the company’s industrial climber Andrei Marunich.
Workers of the Promaltbud company spent six hours breaking the concrete and cutting the metal parts of the monument with a grinder to no avail. Previously, they planned to bring down the stele using a winch, but its power and the length of the tank cable were not enough. Contractors are afraid to use heavier equipment. This is the second attempt at dismantling.
The Lviv City Council decided to dismantle the stele in February 2018. Part of the Monument of Glory was surrounded by a fence, for which 400 thousand UAH were allocated from the city budget. The dismantling work was expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
