The Australian government has decided to discontinue the 457 visa, the main work visa for foreigners.
The country's government website reports this.
“We are and always will be a nation of immigrants, but priority in job offers must be given to Australians. Therefore, we are canceling visa number 457, on the basis of which until now foreign workers were in our country on a temporary basis. We can no longer allow the 457 visa to be a guarantee of jobs that can and should be available to Australians. The migration program must work in our national interests,” said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
At the same time, he said that in return the government would initiate the introduction of new temporary visas for foreign workers, which would better take into account the country's needs for skilled workers and put forward more stringent requirements for the latter.
The 457 temporary work visa was introduced in Australia in 1996 and has remained the main tool for Australian employers to attract skilled foreign workers for up to four years.
