Ukrainians eat fish
In Ukraine, the system of control over the safety of products sold in stores has been destroyed. This has led to a number of botulism poisonings due to consumption of fish purchased in retail chains.

“Tell me, where have you seen any systematic studies of water quality in the habitat of fish, where this fish can become contaminated with botulism bacilli? They are not carried out.
Who is responsible for this? First, the State Fisheries Agency, which reports to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food. Comprehensive programs for studying the safety of the living environment in different regions and the fish themselves are proposed. These programs have not been approved for years. In the meantime, the central body responsible for the safety and condition of fish is studying its stocks, which is not part of its functions. The Ministry's task is to guarantee security.
Why should a buyer enter a store as an inspector and control what the temperature is in the refrigerated counters? Our security is guaranteed by the state. There is a State Food and Consumer Service, but it is taking too long to reform because legislative acts have not been adopted that would fully guarantee the safety of products and develop this service.
That is, we destroyed everything, the sanitary control service, the veterinary control service, and gave authority to one service that cannot implement all the functions that were assigned to it. As a result, our fish, firstly, no one checks for safety, our aquatic environment is not systematically checked for hydrochemical and hydrobiological indicators, only in individual cases, there is not a single systematic state program.
As a result, we have cases that have so far come to light only sporadically, but work to prevent botulism must be carried out systematically,” the expert believes.
