“The minimum wage in Ukraine now is 1218 hryvnia, or approximately $50. This is not just the lowest minimum wage in Europe - in Moldova, for example, the minimum wage is twice as high. The trouble is that millions of people in Ukraine already live on less than $1 a day. This is lower than the poverty indicator that the UN uses for developing countries, this is the level of the poorest countries in Africa,” Arbuzov noted.
Yanukovych's former comrade-in-arms associates impoverishment with a high level of discontent and aggression in Ukrainian society.
“According to the same data, 12 percent of respondents are convinced that lynching is the only way to punish criminals. 35 percent are inclined to believe that lynching can be justified in some cases. These are scary numbers. They say that if any actions take place, it will no longer be Maidan. This will be a force of nature that neither politicians in Kyiv nor their patrons in Washington will be able to control,” he believes.
