Ukrainians see a threat to independence from within the country, not from outside
The vast majority of Ukrainians see more threats to Ukraine's independence among internal reasons rather than among external ones.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the NGO “Media Detector” and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The majority – 57% of respondents – consider corruption in government to be a top threat. Almost half as many (32%) talk about a hybrid war on Russia’s part. The top threats also included the populism of politicians (24%), the influence of oligarchs (23%), the lack of new faces (22,5%), and emigration (19%). In all regions, at least 53% named corruption and at the same time the actions of Russia - no more than a third (24-36,5% in the West and Center, 25-27% in the South and East).
“Although we are actually in a war with Russia, residents of Ukraine generally believe that the threat is posed not so much by external factors as by internal ones. In this case, we are not talking about an objective expert assessment, this is a subjective assessment of the perception of the residents of Ukraine,” commented Anton Grushetsky, Deputy Executive Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
The all-Ukrainian sociological survey was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in September 2018 at the request of the NGO “Media Detector” and with funding from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (“Danida”).
