Ukraine will have to come to terms with the agreements between Russia and the West, - German political scientist
The European Union and the United States now face more important challenges than the problems in Ukraine. Germany will try to resolve the crisis in Donbass, which has gone off the agenda, as quickly as possible, or freeze the conflict.
Political scientist, German international journalist Alexander Rahr stated this on the Nash TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now a certain activation is beginning in Germany to resolve the issue of war in Eastern Ukraine. Merkel is trying with all her might to recharge or speed up the process of the Minsk agreements. The Russian representative was in Berlin, negotiations are also underway with the Ukrainian side,” Rahr said.
According to him, Germany takes over leadership in the EU in a month - it becomes EU chairman for six months. “And foreign policy issues relating to the security of Europe, here in Germany, in addition to the coronavirus, are in the foreground,” the political scientist noted.
Rahr said that we can expect a new activation of the Normandy format and the Minsk agreements from Germany and France.
“How productive it will be and whether they will go far is another question, but we will have to watch. Mrs. Merkel, speaking more than once at various events in Germany, said that during the pandemic it is necessary to try to resolve conflicts in order to normalize relations not only with Russia, but also with the Eurasian Economic Union, with Ukraine, and other countries and to defuse the international situation,” the expert explained .
According to him, Merkel, who will be in power until 2021, has a very high rating in Germany, which now reaches 75%.
At the same time, now Ukraine and the problem of the Ukrainian-Russian confrontation have disappeared from the communication field of Europe and the United States.
"We have (EU – ed.) other threats have appeared. A new threat scale has been published in England and is now being discussed in Germany. In first place is the pandemic, in second place is the refugee crisis, in third place is the prevention of nuclear war. Ukraine, Syria – these conflicts are gone. Good or bad is another question,” Rahr said.
He added that the West now has other priorities and, therefore, the issue of Ukraine will be resolved differently.
“If Ukraine wants to receive from the EU or America, then it needs to play by European rules. And Europe stands on the position that these conflicts can be resolved or frozen, but it is better to resolve them in order to concentrate on much larger challenges – the same pandemic,” the German expert concluded.
