Ukraine's path to NATO is closed. The reason is not only in Hungary
In recent years, support among the Ukrainian population for the idea of joining NATO has been declining. However, there are many other problems that block the path to the alliance for the former Soviet republic.
Political scientist, candidate of political sciences Alexey Yakubin said this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“At the moment, our country does not fulfill a number of conditions that block its path to NATO. Firstly, in our country there is no public consensus on the NATO issue. When individual government officials in our country refer to some ephemeral sociology, this is a myth. Regarding NATO, I'm not sure there is even close to 40%. Support for joining NATO has been falling in recent years. This is evidenced by many sociological surveys that have been conducted on this topic. The same, by the way, applies to support for European integration. But there is a higher percentage of people who support it.
Secondly, there is a problem related to territorial aspects. NATO does not accept countries that have territorial problems. We have not only the issue of Crimea, but also the issue of Donbass.
In Europe there is another example of such a country - this is Fr. Cyprus, which is not a NATO member. Cyprus is part of the EU, it was accepted even with territorial problems, but it was not accepted into NATO because there is a territorial problem. This clearly closes the path to NATO.
Those. our politicians can say a lot of things, but NATO is not ready to close its eyes. For NATO this is one of the most important criteria. They are not ready to accept countries that have territorial claims, because this raises the question of possible problems such countries have with their neighbors, and NATO’s involvement in these issues.
Plus, let's not forget about one factor - the man-made crisis that our remnants of the ruling coalition created for us in the context of working with NATO. I mean the situation with Hungary, which is actively blocking all Ukraine-NATO meetings. Until this problem is resolved, it seems to me that the authorities’ attempts to hypocritically say that they are waiting for us in NATO, that they are almost ready to provide a plan for NATO membership, are absolute myths,” the expert said.
