Ukrainianizers have taken on newspapers: some articles will be required to be published in language
After the purge of TV and radio in Russian, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information Policy took up the total Ukrainization of printed publications, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Voice of Ukraine” writes about this, noting that after voting in the first reading for the draft law on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language, publishers and representatives of the media business fear discrimination against the Russian-language printed press.
The head of the Freedom of Speech Committee, Victoria Syumar, said: “We have become involved in the preparation of amendments to the bill on the Ukrainian language in the context of a gradual transition to the Ukrainian language of printed publications.”
“When language quotas were introduced on television and radio, it was done for a very simple purpose - to create jobs,” she assures.
“Ukrainian songs on the radio are work for both musical groups and recording studios. On television, with the introduction of quotas, the number of Ukrainian-language television programs produced by Ukrainians and in Ukraine has noticeably increased,” Syumar noted.
“These are humorous shows and educational programs, television programs and films. We have actually launched the production of Ukrainian films and TV series. And these are actors, directors, and scriptwriters - a huge layer of the creative class that got work,” she continued.
Syumar fears that Ukrainians, who are accustomed to reading in Russian, will buy Russian smuggled products: they say that magazines, glossies and newspapers from Russia can enter our market through the east.
“We will actually be killing our own producer, and no one needs this,” the parliamentarian suggested.
According to Syumar, the reader must be taught to read language, and this requires a certain transition period. And this must be done so that the industry survives and journalists, layout designers and editors do not lose their jobs.
In her opinion, we can allocate 2-3 years, during which the publication should switch to the Ukrainian language, or propose a phased approach: during the first year 25% of the Ukrainian language, the second - 35%, then - 50%.
“One more point is very important. I categorically believe and will submit an amendment to leave the languages of the European Union. We should be interested in ensuring that our children or scientists, anyone, have the opportunity to read periodicals in English, German or French,” noted the head of the committee.
At the same time, she did not say a word about the Russian language.
