The Ukrainian failed to swim across the English Channel due to exhaustion. Even singing the Ukrainian anthem didn’t help
Ukrainian Maria Krestyanskaya failed to complete the swim across the English Channel. A few kilometers from the coast of France, the crew of her accompanying boat decided to stop the Ukrainian, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The athlete explained that during the last two hours of swimming she saw the French rocks much closer.
However, “after an hour, my speed began to slow down sharply and when the crew tried to talk to me, I thought they were all speaking Spanish. My brain reacted to this fact - “Why do they speak Spanish?!” – (early signs of exhaustion and possibly hypothermia). I couldn't answer them because I didn't understand what they were saying or wanting from me. Then everything was blurry - I was told to go to the other side of the boat to avoid diesel fumes from the back of the boat and began to swim further away. The crew continued to shout at me,” the swimmer wrote.
“Later, the captain called me closer to the boat and extended his hand to pull me up. I argued with him because I couldn’t understand why he was pulling me out, but I agreed. My health and my life have always been a priority in this task, so I do not regret the decision!” – the Ukrainian added.
She also reported that the swimmer, who was swimming parallel to her, was pulled out unconscious about an hour before the Ukrainian one; he died on the way to the hospital.
The Ukrainian thanked the crew of the ship and everyone who was rooting for her. She agreed that the crew's decision was the best for her health and safety.
“The Ukrainian flag on the side of the boat was my inspiration and I sang the Ukrainian anthem many times during my voyage... Glory to Ukraine!” – Krestyanskaya added.
