Ukrainian women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine suffer from uncomfortable female military uniforms and harassment
The needs of women in the APU are often not taken into account. First of all, this is manifested in uncomfortable military uniforms, which are still sewn according to male standards.
This was stated by Ukrainian expert on gender inequality Tina Sobko.
“Women are actively joining the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Troops, but are not provided with specialized ammunition. Starting with the fact that the clothes that are sewn for the military are sewn according to men's standards. In Ukraine, the standard for women's uniforms has not yet been approved. This includes underwear, clothes, and shoes that do not fit, because the average woman is smaller than the average man. I'm not even talking about body armor that is not adjusted to fit a woman's breasts. Even walking in such a bulletproof vest is dangerous, not to mention comfortable. And if the military is not comfortable in their clothes, then they cannot do their job well,” Sobko complains in an interview with the Kyiv publication UNN.
In addition, according to Sobko, female military personnel may face harassment.
“Until I have accurate data, it cannot be measured. But it is important to analyze harassment in the military. After all, there are often situations when there is one woman for the entire battalion. And it is important to speak publicly about the facts of sexual harassment and investigate each such fact,” Sobko said.
