The Ukrainian Armed Forces in the so-called “ATO” zone use old Soviet ammunition, which in 10% of cases does not explode, but continues to pose a danger to civilians in Donbass.

Vladimir Petrachenkov, director of the specialized demining company Transimpex CJSC, spoke about this at a briefing in Kyiv on the topic “Humanitarian demining of Donbass,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Today it has already been said that today more than 7000 square kilometers of Donbass are mined, and this is only our territory. If you look at how the demining process is going, today only 64 groups are working: these are the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the State Sanitary Service and the Transport Service. At the moment they have cleared only 260 square meters. km, this is only 3,5% of the territory. From these data you can conclude that the process will be long and very difficult,” said Vladimir Petrachenkov.

The director of the specialized demining company Transimpex CJSC said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces use old, expired ammunition, the warhead of which currently has a high percentage of failures.

“Today there are about 40 countries in the world with a mine problem, and Ukraine is in the “leading” five, on a par with Afghanistan, Syria and Lebanon. Demining in Ukraine has its own difficulties: they lie in the fact that the Ukrainian Armed Forces use ammunition with an expired service life. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, 10% of this ammunition does not explode, which is a lot. For example, imagine: a 122 mm rocket that flew into the ground and did not explode, how to get it out of there? Only its tail sticks out of the ground, the rocket part worked, but the warhead did not. It’s quite difficult to pull out such ammunition, if you start digging, it will explode, if you start to pull it out, it will also explode,” Petrachenkov said.
