“Ukraine was faced with the most serious catastrophe of the entire war in Donbass, if Poroshenko had not found an opportunity to suspend hostilities in any way, the consequences for him would have been catastrophic. Because there would be a completely uncontrollable situation throughout the entire space from Donbass to Kyiv, where armed groups are still breaking through to express their claims to the authorities, which, in their opinion, are absolutely untenable,” says the politician.
At the same time, Sergei Zheleznyak expressed uncertainty about the viability of the truce and suggested that its maintenance does not depend on Poroshenko.
“Of course, even a temporary cessation of shooting is important, because it is not only lives saved, but also an opportunity to slightly counteract the humanitarian catastrophe. Alas, Poroshenko, as the President of Ukraine, does not control either his own subordinates, or those formations that operate in the east, or, especially, foreign specialists and advisers who give certain orders. Therefore, for now there is only timid hope.
Perhaps this is just a step to regroup the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and today this is already happening. It’s just not clear to what extent this is happening on his direct instructions, and perhaps without his knowledge,” says Sergei Zheleznyak.
