Ukrainian cyber police arrested a hacker-saboteur in Dnepropetrovsk
The cyber police exposed the hacker in spreading viruses using their own closed hacker resources, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the Cyber Police Department of the National Police of Ukraine.
“Law enforcement officers identified a hacker who was constantly creating harmful software designed to interfere with the operation of computers without authorization,” the report says.
Cyber police officers established the involvement of a 35-year-old resident of Dnepropetrovsk in such actions. The man created a variety of malicious software with his own hands and to distribute it he used a private hacker forum he had created himself and a website where he sold the viruses he created. The number of authorized users of these resources exceeded 2,5 thousand. To register on the specified hacker resources, each person could submit an appropriate application and, after communicating with this hacker, consent to registration was provided. Only after completing this procedure did it become possible to purchase viruses created by the hacker.
After infecting a computer, the hacker gained access to its operating system. He had the ability to copy the entire file system, logins and passwords in the browser, gain remote access to the computer, and record desktop activity. To hide traces of its activities, after the virus was completed, the affected computer was forcibly rebooted while simultaneously starting to format the computer’s hard drives.
Based on this fact, the police began criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Art. 361-1 (Creation for the purpose of use, distribution or sale of harmful software or hardware, as well as their distribution or sale) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The police conducted a search at the residence of the attacker, from where they seized computer equipment and mobile phones that he used in his criminal activities. During a preliminary inspection of his equipment, cyber police specialists discovered viruses created by the attacker. The seized equipment has now been sent for examination.
Cyber police have already identified more than 50 people who became victims of the hacker’s criminal actions. The persons who bought such viruses from the hacker are also being identified. Further evidence is being collected. The issue of announcing suspicion to the attacker is being resolved.
