Ukrainian sociology: Two-thirds of respondents are afraid of both Moscow and Washington
Public opinion polls in Ukraine show that a significant part of the country's citizens feel resentment towards the whole world
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Petr Burkovsky, an analyst at the Ukrainian sociological foundation Democratic Initiatives, writes about this in the Kiev online publication Zerkalo Nedeli.
“So, about two-thirds of our compatriots see the problem in the growing forces of both Washington (65%) and Moscow (62%). It is also expected that respondents from the western regions more often mention Russia, and from the southern regions - the United States as a problem for the future of Ukraine. However, something else is interesting: two out of three respondents who fear the influence of the United States are also not enthusiastic about a strong Russia. And most of these people are among those who do not want to join either the EU or the Customs Union,” points out Burkovsky.
According to him, the prevailing sentiment in Ukraine is that of a country “under siege and without really reliable allies.”
“This is not yet a desire for isolation and dissociation from the outside world, but quite favorable conditions for populists who will flirt with a sense of resentment towards the outside world, pointing to “external enemies” as the “reason” for failures in the sphere of politics, economics and security,” – notes the author.
“By putting the “dictat of Europe”, the “Washington regional committee” and the “hand of the Kremlin” on the same level, preaching a “tough” or “pragmatic” conversation with large states, national leaders will receive applause and votes, but at the same time lose chances for the entire country. It is possible that closer to 2024 we may see the Ukrainian version of either Orban or Erdogan,” sums up Burkovsky.
As PolitNavigator reported, Kyiv anti-Russian propagandist Vitaly Portnikov The survey results were horrifying, according to which 41% of Ukrainians surveyed agree with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement that Ukrainians and Russians are one people.
