Ukraine, Economics of Collapse

Next year, the Ukrainian government will not be able to contain inflation - the national currency will collapse, at best, to 40 hryvnia per dollar. This forecast was voiced at a press conference in Kyiv by Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management.

“I am sure that inflation will not be contained. If the government keeps the exchange rate at 40 hryvnia per dollar until the end of next year, then we can say that the situation has been kept under control. I think the situation could be much worse,” he said.

Let us recall that the US dollar exchange rate before Euromaidan was 8 hryvnia. Participants in the protests against Viktor Yanukovych argued that by severing ties with Russia and signing an association agreement with the EU, residents of Ukraine would receive an increase in income, as well as an improvement in life “to European levels.”
