Ukrainian railway is approaching disaster
Passenger rail transportation in Ukraine is collapsing - over the past year, this industry brought losses of 12 billion hryvnia, which were covered by cargo transportation.
Ex-Minister of Transport Joseph Vinsky stated this on the NASH TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, over the past 10 years the number of carriages in Ukraine has halved.
“Over the past year, passenger transportation by Ukrzaliznytsia was minus 12 billion hryvnia. That is, passenger transportation is unprofitable. If there were no cross-subsidies, if they didn’t take money from freight transportation, then today we would have trains standing still and no one would carry anything. There would be no transportation at all,” the ex-minister said.
“We have an absolutely unprofitable industry of passenger transportation on the railway. As a result of this policy - I believe this is an anti-human, anti-state policy - we have reduced the fleet of passenger cars by half in 10 years. If this continues, if we continue to engage in nonsense, this irresponsible position, soon we will not have anything to transport on the railway at all,” Vinsky said.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukrainian train falling apart on the move shocked journalists.
