This was announced by Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, the department’s press service reports.
The minister emphasized that the main danger lies in the fact that shells and missiles are stored on the ground.
“Literally before the end of December we will begin to systematically solve this problem. We are planning the construction of underground reinforced concrete storage facilities. Even with the existing security and defense system, this approach guarantees the reliable preservation of these 400 thousand tons of ammunition. Including in the case of open armed aggression and airstrikes against such bases. In general, according to our calculations, about 10 billion hryvnia need to be found for this purpose,” he noted.
Poltorak emphasized that this cannot be done in one year, so a target program was developed and objects were selected for priority intervention.
Let us remind you that on September 26, a fire occurred at an ammunition depot in Kalinovka, Vinnytsia region, which resulted in a series of large-scale explosions. Shrapnel from the shells flew into the houses of residents of settlements located around. As a result, two women were injured. Due to the emergency situation, almost 30 thousand local residents were evacuated from the danger zone.
