Ukrainian volunteers fled, exposing the Donbass battalion to snipers
Contrary to the statements of Ukrainian propaganda, units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces failed to seize control of Ilovaisk in 2014
A former militant of the Ukrainian Donbass battalion, Iosif Ponomarenko, who surrendered near Ilovaisk and spent 117 days, told the Kraina magazine about this.
“Before the first assault on Ilovaisk on August 10, 2014, I met Yuriy Lutsenko. We talked for 5 minutes and he left. And then he wrote that we took the city, although we didn’t take anything. On the contrary, after the assault we suffered heavy losses: several killed and wounded. And Lutsenko promoted himself,” said Ponomarenko (on the far left in the picture).
“They came into Ilovaisk like calves, on an asphalt road, and around us there was an unexplored green area.” This is a terrible mistake. We were supposed to be covered on the right side by the brothers of one of the volunteer battalions. And they ran away,” the militant recalls. “From there, snipers started working on us. It's a miracle they didn't shoot. We had two tanks. One broke down, the second did not work. Although I myself would not have decided to go. Unknown territory, they could hit you in the side with a missile.”
As PolitNavigator reported, approved by Poroshenko the plan ended in a meat grinder for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
