Ukrainian experts call on Kyiv to start negotiations with Donbass leaders
Thanks to the election of new civilian heads of the DPR and LPR, there is an opportunity for direct negotiations between the Ukrainian authorities and the Donbass republics, which is provided for by the signed Minsk agreements.
Ukrainian political scientist Alexey Yakubin stated this on the Magnolia TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now the heads of the DPR and LPR are not military, they were not involved in hostilities. This means, as far as I understand, that now in the context of the work of the Minsk Contact Group there will be a certain opportunity to conduct direct negotiations with them, which the Minsk agreements require of us. I understand that official Kyiv will say that it is impossible to negotiate with them, but in my opinion it is wrong to force the people who participated in these elections to bear any responsibility.
As a matter of fact, now there are Pushilin and Pasechnik, who were not military men, unlike Zakharchenko and Plotnitsky. The situation that is happening there indicates that if we want to return this territory, there is only a political-diplomatic path. We need not to push these people away and say that they are all terrorists, collaborators and collective guilt awaits them, but we must somehow show, talk about the amnesty prescribed in the Minsk agreements, that we will consider each individual individually,” the expert concluded.
Let us remind you that earlier “PolitNavigator” cited statements of some deputies of the Verkhovna Rada that official Kyiv needs to start a dialogue with the Donbass republicswho elected new leadership.
