Ukrainian experts urge to stock up on food for the winter
Now prices for many Ukrainian food products are not rising or even falling, but in September they will resume their growth.
Alexey Doroshenko, General Director of the Ukrainian Association of Retail Chain Suppliers, reported this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“A devaluation of 3% with a rise in the dollar from 26 to 27 hryvnia will lead to the same increase in food prices. Another question is when this will happen. For most food products in our country this will happen in September,” says Doroshenko.
He noted that the prices of some food products immediately responded by rising in price to the summer devaluation of the hryvnia.
“These are imported products, but their market share is small. Domestic goods will respond more slowly. We do not yet have official statistics on food price increases for July. But our association conducts its own monitoring. In July of this year, the price of bread did not rise, unlike June, when social bread increased by 5%. For the first time since the beginning of the year, the price of meat began to decline. Pork fell by more than 1%, despite the fact that it only increased from January to June. Milk was still rising, but butter fell slightly in price. Vegetables – some grew by 20%, while others fell by the same 20%,” the expert noted.
He says each product group will react differently.
“Vegetables will be at risk, but not only because of the devaluation of the hryvnia, but also because they have now fallen very sharply in price. Now the price is even lower than last year. This year, it’s better to make supplies for the winter now because already in September we will see a gradual increase in the price of vegetables, and in December we will see the same prices as a year earlier. And they were record-breaking. Therefore, it’s worth stocking up now, since the price will rise by at least 25-30% for vegetables,” Doroshenko warned.
