Ukrainian experts: Trump is with us, but Putin is being cheated like a “good policeman”
Donald Trump takes a moderate stance towards Russia, but is careful not to show that he is against new sanctions. The director, Ukrainian political scientist Sergei Taran, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Trump faces very serious challenges in international politics in Syria, North Korea... It will still be necessary to talk with Russia on this topic, if only because Russia is a member of the nuclear club. And it will be very difficult for Trump to talk about anything at all with Russia if the United States constantly strengthens sanctions against Russia. Therefore, Trump is obviously wary of declaring that he is against sanctions, contrary to American politics. But he maintains a fairly moderate position and is the biggest dove regarding Russia among American politicians,” he said.
Expansion of American sanctions is possible only after the deterioration of Russian-American relations, says international political scientist Andrei Buzarov.
“A bill on new sanctions has now been introduced, but Trump will not introduce them. For one simple reason - when he is asked whether he will introduce sanctions, he says that he needs to talk with the President of the Russian Federation. Expanding sanctions—perhaps expanding support for Ukraine through the provision of lethal weapons—is also possible. But this is possible only after the escalation and deterioration of Russian-American relations, which have not yet deteriorated, they have remained at the same bad level,” he said.
The divergence of positions between Trump and the Senate regarding sanctions against Russia is a game of good cop and bad cop, added political scientist Taran.
“These sanctions will not necessarily be implemented in the version for which the Senate voted. The United States has always adhered to the principle of bad cop and good cop in foreign policy. The Senate is a bad cop for Russia. They will make radical statements. And Trump will be more moderate. Actually, this is the toolkit through which the United States will talk to Putin. In fact, both the moderate and radical wings will demand the same thing - that Russia stop aggression in Ukraine and enter the normal civilized course of international politics. But the tools are that there is a bad cop and a good one. It's the same in the EU. Therefore, we must calmly look at the fact that the Senate and Trump have different positions. This is not negativity or division, but a trend that has existed in Western foreign policy for many years,” Taran said.
