“The Hague-based UN court cannot file a lawsuit until Russia voluntarily agrees to be a defendant or until the international community officially recognizes the events in Crimea and Donbass as Russian aggression. Similar problems arise with filing a lawsuit at the International Criminal Court, also located in The Hague. But here the matter is complicated by the fact that neither Ukraine nor Russia ratified the Rome Statute, and therefore did not recognize the jurisdiction of this court on their territory. The Verkhovna Rada several times over the past year tried to approach the issue of ratification, but postponed it,” the publication says.
“It's a double-edged sword. If we ratify the Rome Statute, then Russia will take advantage of this first of all. They will flood the court in The Hague with lawsuits about crimes and violations allegedly committed by the Ukrainian side. The court will spend years figuring out what is true and what is false in these lawsuits. And in this heap the main thing will be lost - the consideration of the claim of the state of Ukraine against the state of Russia. Moreover, no one in the Russian Federation is going to ratify the Rome Charter or admit their involvement in the war in Ukraine,” the newspaper quotes a Verkhovna Rada deputy who wished to remain anonymous.
