The decision taken by the Verkhovna Rada to ban the import of books published in Russia into the territory of Ukraine will not help the Ukrainian publisher fill the vacant niche in the market.

The founder of the Ukrainian publishing house “Summit-Book”, Ivan Stepurin, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.
“I’ll say for sure that neither I nor my colleagues have sufficient resources to reproduce such a volume of literature, such a wide range of literature here on our own. The average cost of translation is known - it is about 3 - 5 thousand dollars. And the circulations operated by Ukrainian publishers do not exceed one to two thousand copies,” the publisher noted.
“It’s easy to calculate how much of a burden just translating and buying copyrights puts on a book. Considering the wide range and number of titles the literary world generally offers today, then, of course, if we take even a 10 percent share of it, it is unlikely that Ukrainian publishers will be able to handle such a volume as to replace educational literature, translations of world classics, and so on.” , admitted Stepurin.
