This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the head of the Far Eastern regional organization of the Russian Trade Union of Seafarers, Nikolai Sukhanov.
“In violation of the requirements of the 2006 International Maritime Labor Convention, the shipowner does not pay wages for six months, the total amount of debt exceeded 150 thousand US dollars. The crew decided to refuse to carry out any work on the ship, with the exception of work to ensure navigation safety, until the shipowner pays off the wage arrears,” says the letter from the sailors, which was provided by Nikolai Sukhanov.
It is noted that the sailors are asking the captain of the seaport of Nakhodka to check the shipowner’s compliance with the requirements of the 2006 International Maritime Labor Convention and take measures to detain the ship. They also informed the maritime administration of the port of Nakhodka that they would not fail to carry out work related to the departure of the vessel until their demands were met.
It is also indicated that the sailors intend to seek protection of their interests in the Nakhodka City Court and ask the Russian Union of Seafarers to provide legal support to represent their interests in court. It is reported that a lawyer for the Far Eastern regional organization of the Russian Seafarers' Union is now transferring cases to the Nakhodka court.
