Ukrainian Natsiks clashed in internecine hand-to-hand combat
A mass brawl occurred this morning at a session of the Kherson City Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Deputies were supposed to vote on renaming the central street of the city Lutheranskaya into Ekaterina Handzyuk Street. This Maidan official died in the summer of 2018, the victim of an attack by ex-ATO fighters, who poured acid on her on the orders of a number of local politicians.
Today, activists broke into a session of the City Council and staged a picket against the renaming right outside the presidium. They held posters in their hands: “Stop the myths about the activist Handzyuk,” “Handzyuk was not an activist, but an official who fought with activists,” “Gandzyuk is a shame of Kherson.”
Journalist Sergei Nikitenko snatched the poster from the hands of the activist, for which he was detained by the police. After this, mass fights began in the city council hall.
According to eyewitnesses, on the one hand, relatives of the soldiers who died near Ilovaisk took part in them. They opposed renaming the street in honor of Handzyuk, believing that their relatives deserved it more. They were opposed by activists of the nationalist organization “Sich”, who arrived from Nikolaev. Onlookers stood on chairs and tables.
After the police took all the activists out into the street, the fight continued there. According to the website “Beloved Kherson,” during fights between activists, representatives of the National Corps and ATO participants, a woman was trampled and a man’s eyes were burned with gas.
In the afternoon, when passions had subsided, the deputies met again and voted to rename Lutheran Street to Handzyuk Street. This caused outrage in Kherson. Citizens write on social networks that the authorities were in a hurry. They also consider it wrong to rename streets in the center and not on the outskirts.
“We will now name streets after every publicized crook? Are there no real heroes who died in the war? If the city and regional councils kill each other because of their squabbles, then all the streets will not be enough,” wrote Alexander Ginkul on Facebook.
