According to journalists, in the car that tried to drive through the blockade were a correspondent for the Polish newspaper Panorama Lublin, Jolanta Kozak, and a lecturer in the art department at Marie Curie-Skłodowska University, Doctor of Science Anna Sekowska.
“About 1-2 km after the border we were forced to stop due to a road blockade carried out by the Ukrainians. The protest was related to the suspension of the agreement on small border traffic with Russia and Ukraine. I went to these people and handed them a letter from the consul requesting permission to cross the border with Ukraine. The protesters assured us that we would pass within an hour.
At the same time, the number of protesters increased, among them there were many aggressive skinheaded men. A Ukrainian police patrol and border guards appeared there... And then the news came that no one would be allowed through for another hour or two. Then my husband decided to drive to the side of the road. Immediately the car was surrounded by protesters. They started hitting the car. One of the Ukrainians jumped on the hood of the car and hit the windshield with his fist. Protesters with knives pierced the tires of the car,” says Jolanta Kozak.
At the same time, according to her, the police stood nearby all this time and did not interfere. Only when the Poles were pulled out of the car and the radicals began to beat them, law enforcement officers loaded them into a car and took them to the police station in Zhovkva. There they were interviewed as witnesses and provided assistance. The Polish citizens were found to have numerous bruises, and Doctor of Sciences Maria Sekowska was hospitalized with suspected rib fractures.
