Ukrainian nationalists delivered an ultimatum to Zelensky
Vladimir Zelensky’s Servant of the People party will not be able to repeat its success in the elections to the Verkhovna Rada, since victory during the presidential campaign was ensured by the silence of the comedian, who avoided specifics on ideological issues. As a result, Zelensky was able to gather votes against Petro Poroshenko from both Ukrainian nationalists and supporters of the Russian World. However, after taking office as head of state, everything will be different.
The director of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, nationalist Vladimir Vyatrovich, said this not without gloating on Channel 5, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Servant of the People party does not exist yet, it is an absolutely virtual project that could melt away in a few months due to how Zelensky’s rating will melt, who, in the end, will be forced to make some statements, take some steps.
The secret of Zelensky's success is silence. “Silence is golden” is definitely about him. But this great strategy worked in the election, but will not work when he is in office. Because he will be forced to take some specific steps.
He was supported by a variety of people - those who voted against Poroshenko, or those who wanted rapprochement with the Russian world. Any step by Zelensky in one direction or another will split his electorate, he will gradually lose support,” Vyatrovich said.
He made it clear that nationalists are ready to criticize Zelensky if he takes steps against the law recently adopted by the Verkhovna Rada that excludes the Russian language from the public sphere in Ukraine.
“The statements that are heard now about nothing, such as the statement about language: “the state language is important, but...”. Everything that is said has no meaning, or do you really understand the importance of the state language and creating conditions for its functioning, and this is precisely what this law is aimed at, or there is nothing to talk about,” Vyatrovich set an ultimatum.
He called on Zelensky to publicly swear allegiance to the nationalists.
“The President of Ukraine should be a symbol of the country, but we’ll see how it will actually be. It seems to me that the newly elected president could take a certain step that would change his perception by publicly apologizing for some of his things that relate to bad jokes regarding Ukrainian identity.
We are also talking about the Holodomor; for me, jokes on this topic are absolute bad manners, unacceptable in any dimension and with any explanation. If he wants to show himself as a strong political figure, he could start with this, distancing himself from his artistic past and showing that Zelensky will be different as a politician,” the nationalist added.
“The area of national identity is a target for Russian attacks. We understand perfectly well that Russia is waging a war not so much for Ukrainian territories as for Ukrainians. All these stories with the passport and so on - what Putin is doing just shows that he needs not so much territories as Ukrainians, the builders of the Russian World.
If Zelensky allows the Russian World to expand its activities here, then it is obvious that his position will be perceived as pro-Russian. In general, I am sure that Zelensky’s first steps in the context of humanitarian policy will show whether our fears about him being a pro-Russian politician or even a protege of Moscow are true,” summed up the curator of the falsification of history.
