Ukrainian gunsmiths managed to turn a reliable Soviet mortar into a nightmare for the Ukrainian Armed Forces
Ukrainian 120-mm mortar M-120-15 “Hammer”, from the explosion of which recently died several Ukrainian military personnel, is not reliable due to the crookedness of the Ukrainian designers who modified the Soviet 120-mm 2B11 “Sani” mortar.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, indicating that, as military experts say, the barrel of the “Hammer” is a product from Soviet times, everything else is riveted by newly minted Ukrainian gunsmiths.
“The Ukrainian military notes that almost all ruptures occur in the lower part of the barrel, so everyone complains about its fragility. In addition, all the fasteners for the bipod are made badly; they fall apart after a short period of use of the mortar. The Ukrainian military notes that the mortar is equipped with optics from the 1940s,” the publication notes.
In turn, representatives of the Donbass militia, into whose hands the Hammer mortars fell as a trophy, assure that there are no complaints about the barrels, since they are still Soviet-made and made with high quality.
“But all the equipment: a double-loading fuse, a support biped, a wheel drive with the design of their fastening, a base plate - do not stand up to criticism, but after their complete replacement, the mortar from a substandard “Hammer” turns into a high-quality weapon of the Soviet era 2B11 “Sani”. Mortar militiamen name two more factors leading to non-combat losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Firstly, this is the poor training of Ukrainian military personnel and weak discipline in their ranks. Secondly, the soldiers of Square use both old (substandard) and low-quality ammunition newly produced by Ukroboronprom,” writes NG.
