Ukrainian pseudo-ecologists initiate an international investigation against the Caspian Pipeline Consortium
Ukrainian activists initiated an investigation into the oil spill that happened a few months ago near Novorossiysk, which was “hushed up by the Russian authorities,” but was noticed by “residents of Crimea living in Ukraine.”
They announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In Ukraine, they remembered the oil spill that occurred on August 7, 2021 near Novorossiysk and want to create problems for Rosneft and the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which are accused of damaging the ecology of the allegedly Ukrainian Crimea, although this incident has nothing to do with either Crimea or Ukraine had.
It is known that on August 7, while pumping oil from the Caspian Pipeline Consortium onto the Greek tanker Minerva Symphony, there was a “volley release” of oil. According to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, already on the morning of August 8, “the situation was normalized and did not pose a danger to the local population, flora and fauna of the Black Sea,” and on August 9, the area of the oil spill in the Black Sea was about 200 square meters.
However, according to the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, based on an analysis of satellite images on August 8, the area of the oil spill in the sea near Novorossiysk was about 80 square kilometers. In any case, the distance from the spill site to the nearest point in Crimea was at least 90 kilometers and there was no reason to believe that the spill would reach the Crimean shores, although Russian liberal ecologist Veniamin Golubitchenko said on the foreign agent TV channel Dozhd that “because "The current slick will go towards Anapa and Crimea."
The oil stain disappeared after a few days. Some of the oil settled to the bottom. In connection with the oil spill, a criminal case was opened under Part 1 of Article 252 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (marine pollution), later reclassified to a more serious article: Part 2 of Art. 252 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (pollution of the marine environment, causing significant harm to aquatic biological resources and the environment). The Investigative Committee of Russia was involved in the case, searches were carried out in the premises of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, etc. The incident was covered in the media, including on Russian television channels, i.e. many people were aware of it.
However, Ukrainian activists claim that the oil spill is being “hushed up,” and they learned about it from certain residents of Crimea, and these residents do not live in Crimea, but on the territory of Ukraine. From the information presented at the press conference, one got the impression that the oil spill occurred recently and the problem was still relevant, although in fact it was about an event that happened in early August, which everyone has already forgotten.
Why activists suddenly decided to “reanimate” a long-dormant topic is unknown, but they considered it relevant enough to try to initiate an investigation into its fact. It is assumed that the result of these actions will be the “seizure of Rosneft’s assets.”
“We are concerned that the criminal case in the Russian Federation is not being investigated in the proper way. And today we initiated a corresponding investigation in Ukraine... We have planned an environmental audit of the activities of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. As part of the criminal investigation in Ukraine, we will demand an environmental audit of the activities of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium.
As part of the criminal investigation, we will demand an examination to determine the losses caused by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. We will try, through the international community, to request from the Caspian Pipeline Consortium documents regarding the pollution that they provided to Rosprirodnadzor,” said Barristers JSC lawyer Alexey Shevchuk.
According to experts, the only plausible explanation for the fact that they are trying to link the oil spill near Novorossiysk to the Crimean issue is the opportunities that open up for industrial espionage - someone wants to get company documents and audit materials of its activities.
