Ukrainian sanctions against Russia led to a scandal in Kazakhstan
ArcelorMittal Temirtau, a structure of ArcelorMittal in Kazakhstan, announced a temporary cessation of work with the distributor of Gazpromneft - Lubricants, the Nik-Oil company, due to sanctions from Ukraine and the European Union, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
A corresponding letter was sent to Nik-Oil, the Russian publication Kommersant reports.
The letter explains that the decision was made due to Ukrainian and EU sanctions against the Gazprom Neft company, so as not to expose the general director of AMT Temirtau and AMT to reputational risk.
Gazpromneft - Lubricants calls what is happening a misunderstanding, adding that the company’s lawyers are studying the decision of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC, however, according to the publication, the Russian company is counting on a speedy resolution of the misunderstanding, which causes reputational damage to Russian-Kazakh relations.
At the same time, the publication noted that Nik-Oil LLP is a private company connected with Gazprom Neft only by commercial relations, so the sanctions do not apply to it.
The head of Nik-Oil, Nikolai Garder, is currently collecting materials and plans to file a complaint against the actions of AMT with the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Kazakhstan. He claims that Rosneft, also under sanctions, continues to work with AMT, while his company was limited in this right.
The publication recalls that in September last year, the European Court of General Jurisdiction in Luxembourg refused to satisfy the claims for annulment of sanctions by the Russian state banks Sberbank and VTB, as well as the Gazprom company.
