Ukrainian security forces failed a secret operation to detain 18 Berkut members
In the summer of 2014, the Ukrainian prosecutor's office identified 18 Berkut employees allegedly involved in the execution of Maidan protesters, but was unable to detain them.
The chief military prosecutor of Ukraine, Anatoly Matios, spoke about this on the ZIK TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Matios recalled how in June the cases of the dead Maidan workers were investigated.
“After familiarizing ourselves with the case materials, reports of prosecutors and investigators on the 10th of August 2014, thanks to an operation planned in great secrecy under the legend of holding a parade of troops in August 2014 to ensure the security, training and preparation of a certain part of the National Guard, the Berkut, as well as the Alphas, were supposed to leave for the Desna training ground in the Chernihiv region,” said Matios.
According to him. At the training ground, 18 Berkut employees were supposed to be detained simultaneously, and about 15 people knew about the planned operation.
“It so happened that the operation was supposed to take place the day after tomorrow, tomorrow morning all the units involved in the preparation were supposed to leave, and in the morning all 18 Berkut people left Ukraine in different ways - by trains, buses, transport,” the prosecutor added.
He also noted that everyone involved in making management decisions was given a package of documents with a list of these “Berkut” officers. At the same time, everyone made one mistake in such a package - a different surname was written on the general list.
“One of the lists worked. I won't say who it is. Because after this failure, a criminal case was registered, everyone was interrogated, including me, for about seven hours as the deputy prosecutor general who oversaw this case. They interrogated everyone - Prosecutor General Yarema, employees of all the SBU, and so on. I signed a non-disclosure agreement before the judicial investigation, so I can’t say,” Matios explained.
